I Want Cha Back Animated Music Video Promo
I Want Cha Back is a high-energy 40-second promo created for the track by Future Funk artist Yung Bae. Produced during my final year of undergrad, the project is a visual tribute to the retro 2D cel-animation style of the 80s and 90s, utilising hand-drawn 2D animation, TV Paint, and After Effects.
Beyond the technical exercise, this project served as an early exploration into how atmosphere and mood can be built through the synergy of visuals and sound. The song heavily pulls from African American Funk rhythms, which inspired the vibrant, whimsical aesthetic and "fantastical" energy of the short. This was a foundational inquiry into Black Joy and Aesthetic Sovereignty, exploring how playful, subcultural tributes can be leveraged to create high-fidelity spaces for unbound expression. While these themes were in the background then, they have now moved to the forefront of my research-led practice.
